Home & Design — Show House Magic: Rustic style meets modern flair in the 2015 DC Design House

July/August 2015

A newly completed house in McLean, Virginia, hosted the 2015 DC Design House. Designed by Harrison Design and built by Artisan Builders, the 8,869-square-foot home conveys a farm-house vernacular recalling the region’s bygone days. This year, 24 area design teams transformed 28 spaces—indoors and out—using creative, innovative ideas that respected the home’s rustic style while injecting sophistication, elegance and a touch of whimsy.

An ORGANIC COMPOSITION The natural materials of the house inspired Scott Cooke’s design of the GENTLEMAN’S RETREAT. “The stone, the wide-plank floors—it all said that the room should be rustic,” he explains. Wallpaper from Thibaut that looks and feels like wood provided a backdrop to antique furnishings, lighting and accessories from Hollis & Knight. A strong palette of browns and blacks was reflected in artwork provided by Cross MacKenzie Gallery for this inviting, masculine space.

Curbed DC — 96 Photos of the Eighth Annual D.C. Design House Showcase

April 8, 2015

Take your first look at this year's D.C. Design House with 96 photos at 956 Mackall Farms Lane in McLean, VA. 24 design firms took up the challenge to transform a 8,869-square-foot mansion that was built to suggest a "modern farmhouse" feel.

The "Gentleman's Retreat," is aimed to bring out a 19th century farm dwelling feel. Scott Cooke, the designer of the room, maintained a monochromatic color scheme with indoor window shutters and a canopy bed. Many of the decorations in the room are antiques as seen in the drop-leaf bedside table and canopy bed. The Thibaut wallpaper is affixed with wood. The design is called "Eastwood," which is a nod to Clint Eastwood.

Home & Design Magazine — "Show House Style"

July/August 2013
Home & Design Magazine Lower-Level Dining Room. Designing this relatively undefined space required ingenuity from Scott Cooke (Scott Cooke Design), who envisioned “an inviting room in which to congregate.” Cooke repeated the tray ceiling’s circular shape with a round sisal rug hand-painted by Billet Collins, a round dining table with a base from J. Lambeth and chairs from Henredon that echo the same curves. Modern art hung in a library area and throughout the space, providing a counterpoint to classical forms such as a chandelier by Niermann Weeks and an antique Buddha from Hollis & Knight. A palette of blue and terra cotta finished the room. Read the article.
